on food, health and business

The past few years, aside from the realm of helping businesses and organizations become more competitive, I was drawn to literature of health. Maybe because I am 35. Though young still, I am no longer a young man = )

I visited the hospital during the last five years far more "frequently" than my first 30 years. In fact, I can not remember a single incident when I was ever hospitalized before I turned 30. But that's that. I thank God (and my family and the Philippine medical practitioners) for He has sustained me from my bouts with dengue and the recent totally energy sapping acute gastroenteritis = )

Maybe Ellis' going home was a nudge that opened my eyes to see the parallelism between living systems and man-made systems like organizations, businesses.

The first nudge was the show House, M.D. I was pleasantly surprised that the show's writer used similar techniques akin to industrial engineers problem solving techniques as the device in communicating to the viewers how doctors work through their diagnosis.

The second nudge was the plain fact that I am already in 30s and that my metabolism has slowed down a bit compared to my hormone enraged teens = ) So, I gravitated towards running even before marathons became the "in" thing in urban Metro Manila. As I started running every other day for at least 45 minutes, I bought myself two books about running. One book explained the science of running and the other book is a memoir of a Japanese fictional English-writer on how it has been ever since he started running some 35 years ago.

Then, there was these two wonderful and humbling "coincidences" when my amor for business crossed with medical and nuclear world. These were the time when I facilitated a vision-mission seminar for the Nuclear Regulations Licensing Safeguards Division of the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute and the Philippine Society of Medical Oncologist. As I was preparing the materials, I can not escape the highly similar dynamics present in living systems and man-made systems. That I was brought to the conclusion that if businesses study what is needed for a body to be healthy, one will truly get the line, "health is wealth". And I mean that both figuratively and literally = )

Then, as I delve deeper to what makes one healthy, I could not let go of the statement given by a doctor - "We are what we eat!" And was brought to the facts behind why diabetes, heart ailments and cancer are on the rise. It simply because of the things that we literally "feed" ourselves.

Apparently, when we do not eat fresh things like fruits, 50% of the time, our bodies treat what we eat as alien beings. By that, our immune systems goes on an overdrive to fight these "invaders" called "fast food nutrients". The result of these ongoing war inside our bodies - inflammation. In short, we get fat = ) Getting fat is an aggravating factor when it comes to health issues.

Have you ever wonder why our weight gain happened after graduation? Think, what were the type of food we were eating during college? Most probably, home cooked meals. And compare that to what we are we eating when we are already working? Most probably fast food and processed food.

I have nothing against fast food. They serve a purpose. They employ people. Give tax revenues to our budget-deficit government. Plus, they are easy to find and they are truly cheap. Tinatawid nila tayo sa gutom. But do we really need to make tawid everyday? = )

In any entrepreneurial initiative, it is best to offer a solution to a problem. Though the diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular incident numbers are already considered catastrophic in the realm of medicine, I think, we as a nation is still indifferent to this medical and health catastrophe. We are so indifferent that when one asks entrepreneurial students what business they will put up, someone will always say a fast food franchise or one of its cousins = )

Sad. Full stop. Also true.

But in the future, the numbers of dying because of these diseases will so big, the whole supply chain of our food will be re-thought and redesigned. And our economy will grow because of this.

The Japanese is once again proven right. The first step towards improvement is an awareness that a problem exists.

This dynamic is also true for our bodies. When bad bacteria and viruses invades our body, our body learns from it. And in the processes of learning, it is equipping us, and our immune system, to beat these bad bacteria and viruses.

The problems that our bodies and our organizations encountered and solved, made us, them, stronger... healthier.

Class A talents

This is hope.

Aside from being a learning facilitator for the academe and the corporate world, I was given the privilege to collaborate with unique individuals with certain abilities and run a talent management firm.

We supply talent, primarily, for the local advertising industry. And sometimes, for regional projects.

(As an aside, we have a talent testing himself with the demands of the current Starstruck show. Modesty aside, it seems that, through hard work, he has won the confidence of the Starstruck Council. And knowing him, the experience of being in the bottom two last Sunday, will only drive his engine to become better.)

I'm just, let's say "sad", for the lack of a better term, that when casting calls are made and the client specifies "Class A" talents, it usually means mestizas and mestizos. Worse, Brazilian models who only speak halting Tagalog.

Let me be clear - I have nothing against the men and women of South America. I just feel sad that when local advertisers and fellow Filipino want to position their products in the aspirational category, they will use mestizas, mestizos and Brazilians as the device to communicate the aspiration idea. Why? Maybe it's the advertiser's bias or simply the limitation of the creative mind in coming out of a new take on communicating "aspirational".

This is an honest and pure question - do we look upon ourselves, as a race, so low that our kayumanggi color will not be effective in communicating an aspirational concept?

Or are we so lazy to come up with a fresher idea to communicate an aspirational product? = )

I pray and I hope for creativity to strike in the creative minds of the creative directors that they come up with a 2010 take on communicating aspiration = )

the avatar entry

I watched this movie with Beb three times. The first two in the usual THX movie house. The third one in 3D-IMAX because I wanted to know how it would feel in 3D = )

The last two films I watched more than once in the cinema were The Last Samurai and The School of Rock. Both film, though in totally different genre, were seminal influences.

The Last Samurai for its depiction of the strength of Asian women. School of Rock for the film's ability to use Jack Black as a unique and effective device to transmit the writer's passion about rock n' roll and embed it in the audience.

And the reason why I watched Avatar three times is simply for the fact that the film is a different experience.

Good story-telling. Solid story. Technical excellence.

But my subliminal thing on this is when you try to dissect what the film means. What was the story teller trying to tell? To share?

All films are out there not only to entertain but, more cautiously, to inform and more dangerously to educate.

Aside from that fact, work of arts are reflection of the people's realities. And the reality that we see and share are first and foremost the reality of our hearts. We see what's in our hearts.

Why would the concept of Avatar exist? It is easy to say that the older generation do not get it and I understand where that comes from because I used to say that too = ) But why want a new life? Is the current life that we have really such a bad thing? Boring? That we want something else? Experience something else? How is life supposed to be ba? That we do not like what we have? Is it pointless? A mere transaction?

Does the whole universe exists to satisfy us? Our cravings? Desires?

This is funny for me because in an another hat that I wear, we call this dynamic logic or emotion bubble = ) One has to know and understand first the logic or emotion bubble of a client before one can effectively intervened.

Avatar and the virtual worlds. Present names and present expressions of a concept and longings as old as time = )

on remittances and unemployment

It has been another banner year. From Jan-Nov of 2009, our modern day heroes remitted a record $15.8 billion. The highest ever in history.

Economist attribute this to families wanting to rebuild their homes after Ondoy and Pepeng.

The analysis is spot-on.

We all know and the whole world knows that we, the Filipinos, are really a family-centered race. Everything for the family.

But, seriously, with all that money coming in, how come our society has not yet been transformed in a good way? In a good way because, we all know that a growing family without a father or mother because of work have social costs. Increased remittances has shown its ugly head = )

I am wondering, what can the economists, finance persons and social activists (like anthropologist) do out there to leverage the situation so that the good effects of increasing OFW remittances outnumber the bad ones?

It seems that only the Filipino taipans who own banks are really making a killing on this social phenomenon = )

What can educational institutions do to educate the Filipino family, most specially for the holder of OFW Remittance purse, that there are other options from simply going to department stores owned by the very same the Filipino taipans?

Or is it wishful thinking since it is the same Filipino taipans who own the schools na nga pala = )

Maybe it is this dynamic, that perpetuate the disturbing relationship of increasing OFW remittances and increasing unemployment?

Hmmm, can the real Filipino hero please stand up? = )

What will Gibo do? What will Noynoy do? What will Villar do? What will Gordon do? What will Ed Villanueva do?

What can I do?

"... why think like mere men?"

a different take on archeological digs

What if, the very absence of ruins in the Philippines is the very proof of our ancestor's sophistication?

I mean, where do ancient builders get their inspiration to build?

Nature = )

What if, our ancestors do came from the Malay race that build the ruins that abound in Southeast Asia today. What if, these very people saw the "evil" that results from concentrating people activities in a confined space? That in this painful and traumatic experience, they learned their lessons that when they set out to find new land, they carried with them this lesson that when they reached the shores of the Philippines, they never touched our pristine forest?

Never built anything anymore because they learned? = )

What if the absence is the very proof of sophistication? What will prove this hypothesis?

What about the very sophistication of Filipinos in mining and making gold into jewelries long before the Europeans touched our shores? = )

"... why think like mere men?"

poverty and heroism

Why are there many so-called "heroes" in poverty-stricken places?

It seems that the poorer a place is, more heroes abound. The list of recent CNN Heroes finalist seems to push the verdict towards this conclusion = )

Or maybe, the system is so overwhelmed that the system needs heroic acts for it to function... barely function.

Though we should celebrate the people that performs the heroic act, we should improve, develop or even re-think the system, the governance and the management that depends on heroes to perform and deliver its mandate.

expriences and its gifts

To IE302-A1 Class:

I was afraid of this. The effect of the long lay-off before the final exam apparently showed its ugly head. It seems that the Holidays, made it even worse.

Half made the cut. The other, gets another chance.

For those who gets to move on, congratulations. I hope you understand what it means. I also hope you become a better person out of the struggle.

For those who are given another chance, I do not know how you will process it. I can only guess.

For all its worth, let me offer my very own experience of not making a cut and how I processed it.

I was 17 when it happened. First, it hurt, like hell. I was sad then I got angry. Then an alcoholic experience happened that led to a vicious hangover the following morning then the guilt-laden talk from my parents. Bottom-line, I did not learn much from my "5" on my first day. I wasted the gift by drowning it in alcohol and finger pointing. I failed in processing my failure on my first day. Funny = )

The acceptance phase happened when I was already on a beach in Batangas two days after. Seated on the shore, my whole body badly burnt from frolicking under the sun, watching the sunset, an epiphany happened.

I gave that subject my best shot. But the ugly and painful truth is, the experience showed my limitations at that time. There are only two things I can do. Either stay stuck in this limitation by blaming everyone for this hole I am in or push my limitations back and brutally accept that I made a mistake so that I start the process of having more freedom.

I made my choice. It was the right one. I’d like to tell you what was my choice but that may be taken as telling you what to do. And nobody likes to be told what to do.

So, I will leave you with your freedom to choose. God gave you that power, the power to choose. I pray your choice makes you a better person.

If you do not see your student number here, celebrate that you found out your limitation now in a place where limitations are supposed to crop up and be seen. And for those whose student numbers are listed below, again my congratulations. I pray you process this experience wisely, too.

practicum psyche

I was privileged to be part of a practicum/ research study last year that did not end up in the confines of Mapua IE-EMG Research Center and never to be heard of again. The study made its way to a national research colloquium. Got peer-reviewed and was given the chance to be presented in a national conference.

This is one of my recent academic high = )

I actually never expected it to reach that "high". I mean, the raw materials I have were not your usual generic bright boys. But in the end, the three gentlemen gave me one of the pure pleasures in teaching.

I do not know if my current advisees ever dream of having something like that.

But, I always start in advising practicum studies with this end in mind: "that my advisees may contribute a verse, even a line, in the epic called life = )"

So to my current advisees, and also the future ones, I like to open up my psyche on practicum advising.

First, the goal is to finish Practicum 2 with head held up high. It is not to pass Practicum 1. By that, do not worry when the study will be met with challenges in having Practicum 1 approved. After all, the panel's job is to refine the thinking. Just in case you still do not know, you paid for this "refine the thinking" service = )

The key is to engage the panel so that you know how they think. Trust me, it is better this way if we are to look at the totality of your career that's about to begin because in the end, your viewpoint will be expanded and you will be more inclusive. This skill, of being able to confidently engage others in articulating your thoughts and understanding theirs, is essential if you want to move up and around = )

Second, do not compare. In fact, never compare yourself with others. Your road is different from them. And theirs different from yours. Know that there's a grand plan for your life. And by the way, I understand the confusion you may feel right now and trust me, there's a plan for your life. For I have been through the same confusion you have. Clarity comes. Just wait for it.

Third, trust me. When we discuss your work, know that I will bring you to a designed learning experience that will enrich your learning. And by learning, I do not mean to limit it in bookish learning but in understanding, coping and thriving in the invisible dynamics present in your particular situation.

Fourth, when you start to feel that I am not advising you anymore, it means that my job is done = )

And lastly, if we finish it, know that I am proud of you. Serious.

Tuesday

the ironic life sustaining systems of our body

"Our body is designed to sustain life."

Pretty simple. Very straightforward.

This will explain why we feel pain when our body is threatened by some unfriendly virus or bacteria. The pain signals us to do something about it = )

Now, when we gain weight because of Holiday food and our body is designed to sustain life, it must be a no-brainer that if we want to lose weight, all we need is to decrease our food intake and we will be fine. I mean this is the path of least resistance for our body. No need to exercise. No need to sweat it out. If our body is suppose to sustain life, it will take this path. I mean, it will not expose you to the risk of injury when we exercise, right? So, we will lose weight = )

But it is not as simple as it seems. In fact, when we lessen our food intake, it seems that the weight we want to take off seems to get obssessed with us and will not leave us. How come?

Apparently, the way we understand the fact that our body is designed to sustain life, is a bit skewed.

When we lessen our food intake, it actually signals our body to prepare for famine = ) This actually, drives our body to store more fat because the few food intake means food will be scarce in the next few months. So, if the body is designed to sustain life, it will store fat now so that we can use something for later. Thus, the stubborn weight that does not go away as fast as the Holiday breeze by = )

This is fantastic.

My mind is swirling in how intelligent our bodies are designed.

Apparently, it is our interpretation that our body is designed to sustain life that's wrong.

I wonder what are the other things out there that we get wrong? As in, brilliantly wrong?

My Prayer for 2010

Achilles: "Do you see what's out there? Immortality! Take it! It's yours!"

How easy it seems? Well, that's Achilles and Homer talking to you = )

Lord, this is Your year, 2010 Anno Domini. I only intend to follow. Talk to me, in whispers as I wake. Talk to me in grandiose, dramatic and clear ways when I am really about to steer away from You. Let me not be remove in Your presence.

Guide me to path everlasting.

You know me, Lord. Help me know me as I am known to You. Remind me of who I am in Your eyes.

Give me wisdom to see what is right. The courage to choose what is right. The strength to endure what is right. Above all, Oh, Lord, humility to get down on my knees and call upon You, my strength. My wonderful surprise. The One Who inspires, sustains, renews... forgives.

You know me, Lord.

Thank You for letting me know You.

Continue to ignite in me the passions and desires that You have place in me when You were still creating me in my mother's womb. May I continually be Your student, Your child, Your warrior and a salt and light in this world.

My King and my Lord. Your will be done.

Thank you for reminding me that we are all spiritual beings who happen to have human experiences.

I ask that You bless me that I be a blessing to You, to my mission and to the one You sent as my partner.

I raise up to You the whole of 2010. Bless it, Oh Lord! Your will be done.

Thank you, Lord.
