the road less travelled

The truth is that our finest moments are most likely to occur when we are feeling deeply uncomfortable, unhappy, or unfulfilled. For it is only in such moments, propelled by our discomfort, that we are likely to step out of our ruts and start searching for different ways or truer answers."

Exhale. Finally.

The term has ended. I am seriously looking forward to be disengaged from my Professor version and simply be Nunoy.

I'll be walking the earth for awhile. Revisit and take in the music that makes my core move. Read books that will bring me, again, to the place that made me take this path.

Lord, renew me. Remind me that all I can do is "do" and the results are up to You.

I hope it rains when I do my ran on Monday...

I hope I dream... again... and sing U2's Desire : )

Friday

14/27

Must be because they've ask so many people and most of these people told them that it was a challenging learning situation. And they believed. And also assumed that they are like those who came before them.

They forgot that they are unqiue. That they are not accidents that happened. That there is a reason why they are alive.

Fourteen moves on. Thirteen will be at it again. Some for the fourth time. Some for the third time. And some, for the second time...

What goes inside their heads? What biases do they have? What lies have they embraced?

Will they point fingers? Again?

There are two things that have left a gnawing feeling deep inside of me. One lady said, "Intindihin nyo na lang, Sir..." To that I was silent. Why would that request be made? Why? Does the whole world exists to understand them? Does the whole world revolve around them? Must the whole world adjust because they are here? I mean, I still have to see a consistency of being responsible but that seem to be flashes and are far in between and those who came before have to adjust? I mean, we are not even talking about excellence here yet. I just do not get it.

The greatest and most painful line is, "Bata pa kasi sila, Sir..." And that should excuse them? I mean, does being young, if being a 20 year old is young, a justification to be irresponsible? Horde weak thinking?

The next painful thing is this - why do they see their professors during giving of grades and plead to make an exception on them? Have we really failed to teach our young what it means to have dignity?

Or is it simply a situation where they do not know what they truly want? I mean, in the absence of a dream/ vision; pettiness prolifirates.

Lord, I raise them up to you. And grant me the wisdom and patience not to be jaded. May I continually look for that one student that makes this call worthwhile. But even if I do not find that student, may I be reminded that You sit in my class and that I only give back the glory You have lent me...

safe

These names should sign off and think about a summer vacation we all had when we were kids with no front teeth = )

The summer outing in Boracay or in Palawan will not be a means to cope but a celebration in the truest form. A very easy celebration.

TRIA, Jeanine
CACERES, Judith
ISON, Jaymee
STO. DOMINGO, Venus
CORSAME, Tine
CASELA, Meong
FERNANDEZ, Marc

The rest, I still have to see everything you have done.

But this is a promise I make now for the 4th term class, if ever I'll be given the privilege to run it again - it will be the best ever IE302 class. It will be richest in the past seven years. And it will be worth your while. Those who came before and made the cut will consider this thought, this question - how come this class was not the class they had before = )

sign of things to come

I read. Painfully funny and also so true.

Not everybody wants a good education. But everybody wants a good degree.

the vote 2010

In less than two months, we Filipinos will again choose our leaders.

Funny. I started this blog during the 2007 elections. And now, three years on, we're again entering the process.

I hope we finally vote Mr. Wisely = )

Back then, I was hoping and praying that the elections be automated. Thank God. It is. I just hope there's no power interruption = )

What was present then? What has changed since then? How have the Filipinos progressed? I wonder.

All I know is this - Manny Pacquiao got bigger. We were slammed by two super typhoons in two years, Milenyo and Ondoy. This made Civil Engineering and urban planning cool again. The Ampatuans put the Philippines, again, in bad light. The CNN hero gave us the honor of naming our countryman the first ever CNN-Hero. Kris Aquino is till hogging the limelight. And GMA was hounded by three scandals: ZTE broadband, Fertilizers and Hello Garci. We lost President Cory Aquino to colon cancer which made Noynoy ran for President. Why? I do not know. If he wins, we will find out why = ) Cancer also took away Francis Magalona from us.

And of course, the politicians are still at it. Mudslinging one another.

What if all of us, Filipinos, stop going to work tomorrow? Or we all call in sick tomorrow? Use all our leaves all at the same time? You know just to send a message to self-involved powers-that-be that we do not like how they use our hard-earned money, taxes? Highly improbable but possible. Hmmmm, interesting. I actually see this happening :) I mean, we tried talking about it. They hid. We tried exposing it. They hid. It is utter limited thinking to expect a different outcome when one did not change anything in the process. Oh, well.

The OFW remittances have been increasing every year. It seems that only the housing and development is getting the benefits of this trend. Which further aggravates the situation and highlights the important question of - what is the best use of our land? Farming or housing development? Hmmmm, is that question already moving from a simple economic question to an ethical one? I mean, the Philippines is the number 1 importer of rice. That's sad because the country where we import rice studied at our very own UP-Los Banos in the 50s and 60s. Our population is set to breach the 100 million mark by the end of 2010.

The number of Filipinos directly employed by the BPOs is closing in 1 million. Mini-Stop made a killing because of this. Smokers, though globally been decreasing, is spiking in the Philippines because of this phenomenon, too.

But here I am. Amidst all of this. Embarking on an adventure. Personally. Professionally. Hopeful. Equipped... and prayerful.

As an aside, I like what the network has done when it comes to our elections. They made it easier for our politicians to be heard. In a way, leveling the field. Turned this whole thing towards, let the best choice win.

I mean that.

the book of eli

This movie is one of the few movies that made me and Beb speechless as the credits rolled.

This is a beautiful movie. The Road + Kung Fu + 300. Very creative. Attitude ridden. Cool to the bone and to the marrow = )

It presented something very old in a way that's very effective. Or maybe it was all due to Denzel Washington's thespic skills = )

For those who "believe", this is a must see movie. I assure you this movie will affect you in ways you probably never imagined... in a lot of levels.

I never saw the trailer of this movie. We chose to watch it because Denzel never seem to make a bad movie. And personally, I was drawn to it because of the name Eli.

Eli in Hebrew means God.

Though I am not of Jewish decent nor do I know Aramaic, I am by the way 100% Filipino, the name Eli has affected me in ways I also never imagined. My name, Elisier, is of Aramaic origin and it apparently, after some researching, means "God is his answer!"

So, anything that has Eli on it or in it, I am immediately drawn to it.

As Denzel narrated towards the end, "... I have kept the faith. I fought a good fight" my eyes turned misty. A chord was struck.

Bottom line - watch this movie. Period.

small decisions... big decisions

I heard...

The small decisions we make,
the ones we take when no one is looking,
builds our character...

So that when the time comes
when big decisions have to made,
the character that was molded while making the small decisions
... is revealed.

the pan-asian

The welcome news I have been waiting to hear = )

Just heard from an insider that the advertising industry of the Philippines has finally caught up with the slow swelling of self-love for our own skin. Our race. Our color. Being kayumanggi will be obviously "in" again.

I wonder, now, what will happen to the industry that has blossomed through aggravating the cultural "default" setting of Filipinos seeing their own skin as second class?

Thank you, Lord.

A step towards a better tomorrow. Congratulations to the Philippine Advertising industry. May you have a glorious time with this initiative. You will be doing a greater good for the next generation of Filipinos who will now wake up more confident in their own skins = )

contract signing

Yesterday. Thursday. Was a first for me personally.

Imaj, the talent agency (and my personal development initiative and one of the expressions of why He created me), I was given the privilege to manage had a smiling good day = )

It happened at the 17th floor of GMA Building along EDSA. One of the talents who was with us for the past six years signed with the Kapuso Network. We're now co-managing his career with GMA Artist Center.

My creative juices is flowing. Something new is about to be expressed. Birthed = )

I am personally excited for our talent. And on my pursuit to expand the science of cognition, this situation presents a very fertile and unique moment. A God-prepared and defined experience.

Thank you, Lord = )

a thought

If our past was not good. It should be our challenge to become better rather than our excuse...

Tuesday

the economic value of honesty

Imagine.

We are in a wet market, a palengke. Though the tinda are there, there are no tinderas. Only sukis and the parokyanos.

The sukis get the fresh fish and puts it in the weighing scale. Upon knowing the weight, wraps it and pays accordingly by putting it on the jar, getting change if she has one, and leaves.

Now, the situation is weird. But if the system and all the actors are honest, we are better off. Serious.

If all the suki and the mamimili is honest, why would there be a need for a bantay? If there is no bantay because the mamimili is honest, then the money that was suppose to be paid by the may-ari to the bantay for pagbabantay goes straight to the may-ari as profit. But because our current situation is that the mamimili is dishonest, then the may-ari will be prompted to hire and pay for a tindera.

And because her profits has dwindled, there are two things she can do.

One, "cheat" the weighing scale to show the heavier weight than what is the truth. This option will prompt the government to hire inspectors to ensure that the weighing scales used by the tindera and the may-ari are honest. This in return will force the government to use the taxes it got from the same mamimili, the same tindera and the same may-ari for ensuring honesty which effectively robs the very children of these mamimili-tindera-may-ari, the reason why they work (and cheat) mind you, a better education which these children rightly deserve because they are the only ones honest in this system.

In essence, when we are dishonest - we actually pay for it with aggravated interest. We put our future and our children at a disadvantage.

Or two, the may-ari is forced to sell more which in return will force the fishermen to fish more by going out longer sa laot or by using illegal ways like cynide or dynamite. This again will prompt the government to use taxes and so on. This will also deplete our natural resources which again will prompt our government to use taxes and put all our children at a disadvantage.

And the cycle can be extended even further because we also know that our government officials are not all saints.

Bottomline, if we think nakaisa tayo because tuso tayo, think again. We pay, with aggravated interest, for our propensity to be dishonest.

When, oh, Lord, do we start to see that everyone is my brother and my sister...

the danger when bribery overcomes the system

This was shared to me.

A very good friend of mine related to me a very unnerving story. He is an expatriate in a foreign land.

One day while driving home, he witnessed a man literally on fire and running from a horde of spectators. This shocked him.

When he asked his driver, a local, the response was that the man most probably was caught in the act of arm robbery. And since, this place is known for corruption, the people just burned the man. Why? Because if they turned over the criminal to the authorities, he will just bribe the police and be set free. Thus, the fire incident.

Street justice.

Justice served.

Though this may seem unnerving to our 21st century sensibilities, it happens, and I am afraid it will happen, when good people clamor for justice and the powers that be instead of serving the people, serve themselves.

Do our politician know this? No, not the type that went to Harvard. That politician that we see everyday. The one we meet in the streets. The one who attends our fiestas. Does he know this in his heart? Does he know that when bribery overcomes the system, we will start to see bad men being burned on the streets? What will he say to this children when the time comes when his beloved little one grows up and start asking the question of why and how it came to this when his Dad was on the watch?

Do our police know this? No, not the general that has earned his stars. That police that we see everyday. The police that we see when the police with stars wants police visibility. Do they know this in their hearts? Do they know that when bribery overcomes the system, we will start to see bad men being burned on the streets? What will he say to this children when the time comes when his beloved little one grows up and start asking the question of why and how it came to this when his Dad was on the watch?

We are so enamored with societies that has made wealth creation a skill, a natural thing, a skill that can be taken for granted. Have we forgotten that we can also learn something in studying societies that was once wealthy and now in the quagmire of poverty?

How I wish and pray that the education system makes the study of the history of the Roman Empire a required course = )
